Reading a room

Every room has a door: a summary of what the room does and what it can touch. Read the door before you check in. This page explains each part.

Key cards

A room's key card is its risk level at a glance. The author picks it, and the automatic checks make sure it fits the room's access list.

ValueShown asMeaning
lobbyLobby passReads, and only messages you
floorFloor keyCan draft or make limited changes
masterMaster keyCan take real actions, and must ask first

Access list

The access list says what the room uses, in plain words, at three levels:

LevelMeaningExample
ReadsLooks at your data without changing it"Email from the past 7 days"
DraftsPrepares something for you to send or approve"Draft replies, saved but not sent"
DoesTakes an action itself"Sends one digest email to you, and only you"

A Lobby pass room can only read and message you. If a room drafts things, it needs a Floor key or higher.

Custom Rules

Dots let you allow an action, require approval for it, or block it. Every room ships with Custom Rules in exactly that shape:

Your Dot wants to acte.g. send an email
Matching Custom Rulethe room's rules plus yours
AllowDoes it without asking
Require approvalAsks you first
BlockHands it off to you
How a Dot handles an action under a room's Custom Rules.

When you add a room's rules to your Dot (Settings → Personalization → Custom rules), they map like this:

On the doorIn your Dot's settings
AllowTake action without asking
Require approvalAsk before taking action
BlockHand off to you

Every room has at least one Block rule, so you always know what it will never do.

Guardrails

Guardrails are short promises in plain language, like "Never emails anyone but you" or "Skips tickets tagged billing or legal". They're also included in every export, so your Dot sees them too.

Apps

The apps a room expects, like Gmail, Slack or Linear. Connect them in ChatGPT under Settings → Plugins before you use the room. If an app isn't connected, a well-written room stops and asks you to connect it instead of working around it. See Supported apps.
