Install the CLI
dothotel brings Dot Hotel to your terminal. Search the directory, read a room's door, and install rooms as skills or plugins with one command.
npx dothotel add sunday-digest
Requirements
- Node.js 20 or newer. Check with
node --version. Get it from nodejs.org. - No account or sign-in. The CLI only reads published rooms.
Run it with npx
You don't need to install anything. npx downloads the latest version, runs it, and caches it:
npx dothotel --help
Other package managers work the same way:
pnpm dlx dothotel --help
yarn dlx dothotel --help
bunx dothotel --help
Install globally
If you use it often, install it once and drop the npx:
npm install -g dothotel
dothotel --version
Update with npm install -g dothotel@latest. Remove it with npm uninstall -g dothotel.

- dothotel → Youkey card, apps, rules
- You → dothotelconfirm (Y)

- dothotel → Your diskwrite the room's files
- Finds the room. A name, a number or a room link all work.
- Shows you the door: key card, apps, every Custom Rule and guardrail, and whether it's been reviewed. Master key rooms get an extra warning.
- Asks before installing. Pass
-yto skip the question. - Downloads the same files as the website and writes them to disk. It counts as a check-in on the room.
Where rooms go
| You run | Files go to | Used by |
|---|---|---|
dothotel add <room> | ./.agents/skills/<name>/ | Codex, in this project |
dothotel add <room> -g | ~/.agents/skills/<name>/ | Codex, everywhere |
dothotel add <room> --plugin | ~/.codex/plugins/<name>/ | ChatGPT desktop app |
dothotel add <room> --dir <path> | <path>/<name>/ | Anywhere you choose |
The folder name is the room's name prefixed with dot-hotel-, for example dot-hotel-sunday-digest.
.agents/skills/dot-hotel-sunday-digest/ SKILL.md # the room: instructions, rules, guardrails agents/openai.yaml .dothotel.json # which room and version this is
The .dothotel.json file is how list, update and remove recognize rooms the CLI installed. They never touch folders without one.
Using it from scripts and agents
The CLI works without a person at the keyboard:
- When it isn't run in an interactive terminal, it doesn't ask for confirmation.
-yskips the confirmation everywhere.--jsonprints machine-readable output forsearch,infoandlist.- It exits with code
1if anything failed.
